Are you a woman and scared to lift weights?

Nutrition=Quality over Quantity

I wanted to share a thought with all of you that has been on my mind lately.  With a world of conveniences, fast food, and processed food, we need to remember to get back to the basics.  There is NO easy or instant way to eat clean (well, unless you have enough money to have a chef HA!).  It takes planning, preparation and commitment, but it's more rewarding than ever!  If you want to lose weight for good, be, feel and look healthy, it all starts with a good nutrition plan. 
It's crucial to look at more than just the calories in food.  Sugar, sodium, fiber, vitamins, cholesterol and fat also need to be considered when picking out food to eat.  There are so many "healthy" and "nutritious" prepared foods out there, it's no wonder why we keep forgetting the basics!  If it's in the inner aisles of a grocery store or in a box, chances are it's not healthy.  I stick to a rule-if there are ingredients in the item that I can't pronounce, I don't buy it.  Look at the side of a TV dinner just for kicks, and you'll see what I'm talking about.  I now use sliced chicken breast for my lunch meat.  I had no idea there can be HALF your daily limit of sodium in just 4 slices of lunch meat!
So my point is, pay attention to calories, fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, vitamins and cholesterol.  I now buy all whole grain products, including pasta.  Most of the food I buy is fresh produce and lean meats.  I eat 6 times a day, and am able to do so because I eat healthy food that is nutrient-dense and low fat/calorie.  It's great!

The new me...

The new me tries new things!  I love to take on a challenge!  The old me sat around all day, never went anywhere, never tried anything new, and didn't love myself.  The NEW me is happy, independent, confident, outgoing, and enjoys new experiences! 
This last weekend was one of them.  I went on an overnight backpacking trip with my husband to a place here in AZ called Gordon Creek.  It is near Payson and is fairly undiscovered in the region.  It was a TOUGH 2 mile hike, and took us 3 hours to get to our camping spot. 
We encountered horses, cows and a black rattlesnake, YIKES!!!  Well, we kept going and were drenched from the hard work!  It poured on us as we were putting up the tent which was a welcome shower.  ; )  The creek we camped by ended up turning into a raging river from all the rain, and we were lucky to sleep next to that all night!  The following morning, we heard plenty of elk and cows, it was very entertaining!  The hike out was uphill the entire way and was TOUGH!  But, I'd rather be out living and enjoying life than sitting home watching TV.

20 day clean eating challenge

Hi Friends!  I and my team of over 100 people are currently on day 8 of a 20 day clean eating challenge!  You can jump in at any time if you struggle with your diet (we all do!), want to keep it clean, or want to start eating clean and just don't know how or where to start!  Email me at letsgetasixpack@gmail.com and we'll get you going!
The rules are:
Clean eating challenge that starts on Monday 6/13, ending on Saturday 7/2. I am doing this with you!!! The real challenge is the food you can consume must come from the top two tiers of Michi's ladder. If you are not a FREE BeachBody community member, go to www.teambeachbody.com/CoachTorri and join so you have access to Michi's Ladder (under Eat Smart tab). I will also become your free coach! : ) This will take time to pla...n out, but eating clean is not easy or quick. The results will speak for themselves!!
20 day Clean Eating Challenge

1. You workout 5-6 days a week, depending on your program. Aim for alternating days of cardio and resistance training.
2. You eat clean throughout the week and get ONE CHEAT MEAL per week.
3. Check in daily on the event page on Facebook.
4. You have until Monday morning to take your pictures and measurements. You do not have to post them, but make sure you do this! You don't want to miss this!

Eating clean:
1. Your body needs 4-6 small meals per day (i.e. breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and dinner). You should be eating every 2-3 hours.
2. You need to eat at least 1,200 calories a day. This is a clean eating challenge, not a starvation challenge!
3. Try to keep your diet balanced between protein, fat and carbs. Limiting your carbs and fat will help you lose weight and lean out quicker. Don't think you can eat Refried Beans all day and have a healthy and clean diet! : ) For example-breakfast may consist of egg whites (protein) with chopped tomato and green onion added at the end, turkey bacon (protein, fat) and low-fat no sugar yogurt (protein, fat, carb) with raspberries (carb). This equals 2 carbs, 3 proteins, 2 fats.
4. Do not salt your food! Do not add sugar to your coffee. No soda, diet or otherwise! Drink at least 64 oz of water daily!

Addendum: Shakeology, Recovery drink, protein supplements, coffee, natural peanut butter, almond milk, ground turkey and chicken breast are allowed. Turkey bacon and extra lean (96%) ground beef are allowed sparingly (1-2 times a week).

You will need to create a food journal so you know how many calories/fat/carbohydrates/protein you're taking in. A good website for nutritional information is http://www.nutritiondata.com/. http://www.teambeachbody.com/ also has an amazing food journal for $2.99 a week if you want to make this part less time intensive!
Some good websites for healthy recipes are http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/, http://www.fitness.com/, http://www.allrecipes.com/ (they have a "healthy" section).
I recommend to plan out your meals for the week and spend one afternoon prepping a lot of that food. I cook several chicken breasts (bake at 350 deg for 25-30 min) and those last the week for my sandwiches and salads. I also make a homemade soup and that will feed me for 2 dinners and 2 lunches. This will make your life MUCH easier if you devote a few hours one day a week to prep what you can in advance. I like to use seasonings like Mrs Dash as well as herbs (basil, rosemary, tomato, green onion, garlic, etc...) on my chicken and fish to add some flavor.
A food scale is a necessity! You will see that we severly UNDER estimate our portion sizes. Once you start weighing your portions, you will see!
If you are on a nutrition plan for your workout program, you may want to stick with that and participate since that is still clean eating!
If you tend to be obsessive with challenges, this may not be for you.

P90X Review from a Woman's perspective

P90X is the number 1 infomercial in the country, and for good reason-it works!  If you bring it 100% in the gym and the kitchen, you will have amazing results!  I have become addicted to P90X because it teaches you the fundamentals of a healthy workout regimen, which is cardio and weight training.  Cardio alone can lead to injuries, as I took up running for several months, and ended up with a stress fracture in the 3rd metatarsal of my left foot.  Weight training alone can also lead to injury, especially muscle tears and ligament issues.  It's great that P90X incorporates both!  I learned everything I know about working out from P90X.

P90X consists of 12 different DVD's, working out 6 days a week and one rest or stretch day.  There are 3 phases, which are broken down into 4 week segments, with the 4th week of the month always being the recovery week.  Don't think the recovery week is easy though, or you will be sadly mistaken!  Every month, you switch to different weight training workouts, thus the science behind muscle confusion.  I was sore the entire 90 days!
P90X also comes with a nutrition guide, which teaches the fundamentals of clean eating; the other half of the equation.  I would recommend following this plan no matter the extra cost.  You will also be surprised that you don't spend much more at the grocery store because you will no longer be eating out and will be buying fresh food instead of processed food.  If you aren't eating clean, your workouts will be in vain.  My husband and I followed the nutrition guide, and now I know that what I cook is good for my body.  It is amazing how great you feel after a few weeks on this diet.  Fast food literally makes me sick to my stomach now!
Tony Horton is the best trainer anyone could ask for.  He's a great combination of borderline corny and stern.  He jokes around a lot and encourages you to give your best to ensure the best results!  There's a part in plyo that always resonates with me.  One of the men in the video has a prosthetic leg and he is doing plyo, the hardest workout in P90X!  Tony says "I don't want to hear any complaining from ANY of you!"  That got me through plyo every week!

Why do you need a coach?

Having a coach is a necessity if you want to succeed! Every competitive sport has a coach of some sort, and for good reason!  You need someone on the sidelines cheering you on and providing valuable advice and insight, which will catapult you to the next level and give you so much more motivation and accountability.  I initially had a non-existent coach, and I know I would have been much more motivated if I had a great coach there to help me out and answer any questions I may have.  If you currently have a non-existent coach, you can change at anytime and will be greatly increasing your chances of success! 
Surround yourself with people that you want to model your life after!  If you surround yourself with negative people, you will notice that you will slowly turn into those people.

Working out is SO much more than looking good!!!

In my journey, I have been amazed at all the benefits of working out and having a clean diet.  I started P90X just wanting to improve my body and self image.  I could go on forever of all the changes that have occurred within my mind, body and spirit, not to mention drastically reducing the risks of horrible, life changing diseases!  I'm going to go over some of the changes and benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle that occur, so if you're thinking of starting down a path towards a healthier you, now you have even more reasons not to delay!  I'll break it down into 2 major categories:  Mind and Body

Increased Self-esteem
Increased Mental Focus
Reduced Depression-this plagues so many people!
Decreased Stress Levels

Decreased risk of heart attack, osteoporosis, and breast cancer-by up to 60%!!

P90X and Beachbody

Hi friends!!  I am starting this blog to assist you with becoming fit, happy, and the best "you" that you can be!  I am addicted to Beachbody products and have been doing P90X and various workouts for 15 months now, with amazing results!  If you have something on your body that you would like to transform, I can help!  Before I discovered P90X, I was a lazy, depressed, unhealthy chain smoker with no hope for my future! I quit smoking in October 2009, 5 days after my 29th birthday because I was determined not to waste the last year of my 20's because I had wasted the previous 9 years.  I started working out in January 2010 but didn't have a CLUE how to workout the correct way!  Then, I saw the P90X informercial for the millionth time, but this time something clicked.  My husband talked me into purchasing it so we could do it together and we started on 2/1/10!  I completed the 90 days with great results, because I followed the nutrition guide and held myself accountable, not allowing myself to skip any days!  After that, I kind of fell off the wagon and was on and off with my workouts from May-October.  I was so upset by October that I had lost almost all my results, so I started running on my cardio days and lost 10 lbs in 2 months!  Well, due to loving running so much, I then got a stress fracture in the 3rd metatarsal of my left foot. 
I have been recovering from that fracture for 4 months now but have still been pressing play with P90X Shoulder/Arms and ab ripper 5 days a week and have lost 4 more lbs!
